Exploring the Historic and Natural Wonders of Buccaneer Cove on Santiago Island

Buccaneer Cove is a fantastic place to be on Santiago Island during your Galapagos vacations. It is named for the early sailors, pirates, buccaneers, and later whalers who utilized this Cove as an anchorage to careen their vessels, search for fresh water in the higher reaches of the volcanic island, and catch gigantic tortoises for nourishment. The Cove is situated on Santiago’s northwest coast.

Today, the eroding coastline remnants of Buccaneer’s Cove on Santiago Island are home to various sea Galapagos birds, sea lions, and fur seals. The area features intriguing geology, consisting of layers of compacted tuff volcanic material worn into multiple shapes and forms by wind and waves. These tuff ledges serve as nesting and feeding areas for gulls, pelicans, and boobies. Sea lions swim innocently and curiously along the coast, while Galapagos fur seals seek refuge among the rocks to cool down. There are many surprises and a sense of discovery on our panga trip around Buccaneer’s Cove.
