The Galapagos penguin is unique among other species because it is an equatorial dweller. Though it resembles other penguins in appearance, it is restricted to specific regions of the islands. Though most tourists anticipate seeing it, these timid creatures are more difficult to find than lively sea lions and old tortoises. Keep reading to discover more amazing facts about Galapagos penguins.
Days Spent in Water, Nights Resting on Land
The penguins withdraw to the ocean during the day to go on foraging expeditions. But at night, they dig burrows into the ground to sleep. When they are at repose, their flippers are facing outward. When the diurnal creatures venture out during the day, they can find abundant food in the water thanks to the area’s robust currents.

A Tiny Species
The second-smallest penguin species is Spheniscus mendiculus, at only 48 to 50 cm tall. It weighs around two kilograms and lives for fifteen to twenty years. Its feathers, which are covered in black, white, and grey, have a characteristic white border that extends from its chin to the area behind its eyes and around its black ears. Other than that, these penguins have the typical blackhead, back, and white stomachs of most other species.
Galapagos Penguins in Isabela and Fernandina

Make sure to add Fernandina and Isabela Islands to your schedule to see some tuxedo-wearing penguins while you’re there. These areas are home to almost 90% of all Galapagos penguins, while they can also be spotted in northern Santa Cruz, Santiago, Bartolome, and Floreana.
Concerned About Sunburns
Why these penguins walk with a slight stoop over is a question that is frequently asked. It’s due to their sun sensitivity and potential for burns. They maintain their feet in the shade by stooping a little. They also lengthen their flippers to control body temperature and radiate extra heat.
Correspondence
Penguins communicate by body language and vocalizations; their sounds are akin to a donkey’s braying, and they can distinguish their partner and young by their distinctive sounds. They will employ wing motions and specific postures to ward off predators and perform a sort of dance with their wings to attract potential mates.
Swift Swimmers
While many tourists want to snorkel with penguins in Galapagos, such encounters are uncommon. The penguins’ remarkable speed is partially to blame for this. They will only give humans nearby a little notice while they hunt, darting through the water for their meal. In addition to mullet, sardines, anchovies, and other foods, penguins are thought to consume crabs occasionally.

Breeding Rituals
Galapagos penguins form lifelong bonds. To strengthen their bond and express affection, the couples will constantly tap each other with their bills and present to each other. Although their mating season varies depending on food availability, it usually occurs in May or July.
Penguins lay their eggs in the lava rocks’ depressions and fissures. For 40 days, the two parents collaborate to incubate the eggs. When the eggs hatch, the parents feed the young until their feathers grow out and they are able to leave the nest. Penguins are gregarious creatures who live in colonies, but they can be possessive of their area. They will keep outsiders away from their nesting location.

Infants
Due to their rapid growth, juveniles reach adult size in about 30 to 40 days. Because their feathers are light grey instead of the strong black color of an adult penguin, immature penguins are nonetheless easily identifiable. Additionally, they don’t have their parents’ distinctive characteristics because they develop banding later.
Make sure to allot some time for the penguins on your trip to Galapagos. These unusual creatures are indigenous to the islands and are becoming fewer in number. If you are fortunate enough to see penguins, your kids will be thrilled to see them.
