North Seymour frigates and boobies in action! Touch Down

Most tourists are unaware that every island we dock on has a surprise in store for us straight from Mother Nature. It was the same on North Seymour Island this time. This time, we had a few guests who had chosen to stay with us for two itineraries, and even for them—who had just traveled to numerous islands with us—the day ended up being fantastic. Indeed, a day in the Galapagos is never dull.

Following a slightly steep but exciting wet landing on an adobe pier composed of stunning black rocks, we ascended a few naturally occurring steps that led to the trail. Many swallow-tailed gulls along the entire length of the shoreline followed the little cliffs. While some stood alone, others did so in pairs, large groups, or smaller groupings. Several were flying or napping, and we noticed several adorable chicks flaunting their beautiful feathers.

The Galapagos Islands’ fauna is more accustomed to human presence than we are to ours.

Dangerous Neighbourhood

We left the gulls behind and resumed our trip along the trail. But before a minute had elapsed, we began to notice numerous additional species scattered over the area. There were frigates everywhere, big and beautiful. While some were perched on bushes or trees, others were flying around trying to get something from other birds. Numerous male frigates were hunting for females to mate with, proudly exhibiting their enormous, colorful crimson pouches.

Atop their nest, two more fortunate frigates were soundly dozing beside one another. Some were only beginning to construct their nest, and we saw them carrying small branches and twigs that they would eventually utilize to reinforce the nest’s strength. Some men were sitting there singing in their bachelor clubs, trying to get the attention of any brave girls who had a chance to fly by. These magnificent frigates adorned the landscape with their frantic movements and exquisite black, white, and red tones.

Blue Nation

Finally, the blue-footed booby was one of the last species to grab our attention. In addition to witnessing them in large numbers, we also had the chance to see a large number of blue-footed booby chicks. They were going about their everyday lives, just like the frigates, flying around, seeking food, and avoiding the naughty frigates that usually try to take their catch. They were also walking around idly on land, giving off the impression of being silly.

We witnessed them perform some fantastic routines as part of their well-known mating ritual. To get the attention of the female, the male booby flaunted his impressive blue feet. The likelihood of finding a partner increases with the color of the feet. We even caught a booby couple red-handed while they were mating not too far from the dancing scene (sorry to interrupt, guys!). Though the celebration ended far too quickly, our visitors had a great time and even took some fantastic pictures home with them.

Seeing so much movement in one area was incredible. Not only did this vacation to North Seymour set the standard for all our future trips, but it also upped the bar.
