Reptile gender is profoundly influenced by temperature, especially in the Galapagos Islands. Some people believe that a single drop of water can affect the ocean. In specific ways, the same principle applies to reptiles in this unique ecosystem. Except that instead of a drop, it’s a degree of temperature, and the ocean represents their gender. According to science, temperature plays a crucial role in determining the gender of newborn reptiles. The Galapagos Islands, home to iconic species such as giant tortoises (part of the Galapagos BIG15) and other reptiles, exemplify this delicate balance.
Exploring the Role of Incubation Temperature in Determining Reptile Gender
Galapagos giant tortoises and marine iguanas cannot manage the incubation temperature of their eggs since they deposit them underground (usually in sand). This leaves it up to the elements to decide what gender the eggs will be. Scientific research has shown that warmer temperatures during the incubation phase are associated with a higher frequency of female hatchlings. Cooler temperatures, on the other hand, result in higher levels and populations of males.
An effective mnemonic for distinguishing between the two is to imagine “hot babes and cool dudes.”

The Laying of Eggs & Hatching of Galapagos Giant Tortoises
Eggs are laid in a laborious process carried out by females as they travel considerable distances to their nesting sites on the Galapagos’ sandy and arid coasts (July to November). Once they’ve selected a suitable location for depositing their eggs, the female begins digging the nest, which can take several hours to many days to finish. The nest is typically 12 inches (30 cm) deep, and she lays an average of 16 spherical eggs weighing between 2.9 and 5.5 ounces (82 and 157 grams).
After depositing them, the female will cover the nest with mud created from earth combined with her urine and flatten the tortoise-made “plug” by quickly laying down on it. She will then stand up and move away permanently, leaving the nest to be incubated by the sun itself. Females are known to lay between one and four eggs per season.

Incubation time also has a significant impact, as clutches deposited early in the excellent season have longer incubation durations, resulting in more males. In contrast, eggs placed during the hot season have shorter incubation times, generating more females.
In the Long-Run…
In the big picture, this could lead to an unequal distribution of males and females in each reptile’s population, particularly in light of the world’s acknowledged rise in temperature. Population sustainability may thus be in jeopardy. If global temperatures keep rising, some reptile species may become extinct in a sufficient amount of time (assuming they reproduce in the wild, in which case females will outweigh males).

Thankfully, research is being conducted in the Galapagos to show how temperature changes would affect the sex demographics of Galapagos tortoises. Such research will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the species above and aid in creating successful conservation plans that counteract the effects of rising global temperatures.
