For the most part, Darwin kept his distance from his detractors and any ethical and scientific disputes they raised. Thomas Henry Huxley—who even went so far as to call himself “Darwin’s bulldog”—was the one who vigorously defended Darwin’s theory of natural selection. “My good and kind agent for the propagation of the Gospel -i.e., the devil’s gospel,” was how Darwin once described him. Huge audiences listened to Huxley passionately defend Darwin in his lectures. Karl Marx, the well-known philosopher, was present at one of Huxley’s talks. However, Huxley had significant reservations regarding Darwin’s “The Origin of Species” research. He maintained that Darwin was mistaken in advocating for Natura non facit saltum, or “nature does not leap,” with such enthusiasm.
